3rd PhD Seminar of the Center for Symbiotic Mechatronics<\/h3>\n

At the 3rd PhD Seminar of the Research Center for Symbiotic Mechatronics, a cooperation event of LCM and JKU, six speakers gave an insight into their research work, this time virtually, to about 60 participants. The Research Center for Symbiotic Mechatronics is focused on mechatronic systems that increasingly interact with each other and with their physical, digital, human or climate-specific environments. The goal of the LCM-JKU PhD Seminars is an even stronger interaction between the members and the interdisciplinary topics of the research center in order to be prepared for the mechatronic requirements of the future.<\/p>\n

The topics were as diverse as the center itself. They ranged from reducing the complexity of hydraulic systems by studying and modeling hydraulic valves to assigning tags in audio clips to represent acoustic events in clips. The latter can be used in many ways, such as content-based retrieval of multimedia information or in monitoring and surveillance systems.<\/p>\n

Another PhD thesis deals with the electrical surface manipulation of droplets. This allows droplets to be moved in microfluidic devices without valves or pumps. This manipulation of fluids is an important requirement for a so-called lab-on-a-chip, in which droplets can be split, combined, or mixed on a very small scale. This technology in turn paves the way for many different sensing or medical applications.<\/p>\n
